Following a week of heavy downpour, Mumbai has been receiving subdued showers this week with the intensity slated to reduce over the next few days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said Wednesday.
While Mumbai and its neighbour Thane have been placed under a yellow alert Thursday and Friday, no alerts have been sounded in the metropolis for Saturday, with the weather bureau forecasting only moderate showers.
Despite an orange warning, which was in place until Wednesday, Mumbai experienced only light showers and the IMD downgraded its warning to yellow alert.
While the IMD’s Santacruz station recorded only 1 mm of rain and the Colaba coastal observatory received 10 mm of rain between Tuesday and Wednesday morning.
Throughout Wednesday, the dry spell continued with the suburbs recording 0.5 mm rain while Colaba received 2.5 mm between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm.
According to the IMD, the rainfall activity is slated to reduce gradually from Saturday, as no warnings have been issued for Mumbai.
The weather bureau has forecast heavy rainfall in isolated pockets of Mumbai and Thane between Thursday and Friday, following which moderate showers will take over in Mumbai.
Even with the reduced intensity of rain, Mumbai recorded five tree collapses on Tuesday—three from the western suburbs and two from the eastern suburbs. Furthermore, the city also reported three cases of partial wall collapses and five incidents of short circuits during the same period.
However, civic officials said that no casualties had been reported in any incident.
Meanwhile, the total stock in the seven lakes supplying water to Mumbai soared to 37.77 per cent, which accounts for 5.46 lakh million litres, Wednesday morning.
Last year, on the same day, the lake levels remained at 34.09 per cent while in 2022, the water levels soared to 82.09 per cent of the total capacity.
