Of the 58 Zika cases in Maharashtra, most of them have been reported from Pune. As per state health department data there Pune’s Zika tally is 49—three in Pune rural, four in Ahmednagar, and one each from Sangli and Kolhapur.

Of these 58 Zika cases, 20 are pregnant women—16 from Pune city, one from Pune rural and three from Ahmednagar.

More than 1.30 lakh homes were inspected in these areas with mosquito breeding sites identified in 3,105 homes.

Zika is transmitted by the aedes mosquito which bites during the day. “Preventive measures to tackle the spread of infection including integrated pest management are underway,” state health department officials said.

State health officials have said that there is no need to panic. As part of the rapid fever survey campaign, officials have been collecting blood samples of pregnant women within a 3-5 km area of infected patients.

As per Pune Municipal Corporation’s health department, more than 57,000 homes were inspected across the city, with 1,451 homes identified with mosquito breeding sites. The civic body has collected over Rs 2.5 lakh as administrative fee after identifying mosquito breeding sites, and have again appealed to citizens to remain vigilant.
