Veteran Hindi television presenter and actor Manju Singh has passed away. Lyricist, singer and screenwriter Swanand Kirkire on Friday condoled Singh’s demise on Twitter and recalled his time working with him for Doordarshan.

Swanand shared how it was she who brought him to the city of dreams and gave him his first writing opportunity. He wrote, “Manju ji brought me from Delhi to Mumbai to write my show Swaraj for Doordarshan!”

Manju Singh was one of the pioneers in the Indian television industry who produced the notable shows Swaraj, Ek Kahani, Show Time etc. Affectionately called ‘Didi’, she was the anchor of Khel Khiladi, a seven-year-long children’s show. Singh also appeared in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Golmaal, where she played the role of Ratna.

Singh threw light on national, social and cultural issues in his show. He debuted as a television producer in 1983 with Show Time. His show Ek Kahani was based on literary short stories from several regional languages. Another show that was well received by audiences across the country was her documentary-drama series Adhikar, which was based on the legal rights of women. In recent times, Singh was associated with several international film festivals for children and young adults. In 2015, he was recognized for his contribution to the creative arts and education sector and was nominated as a member of the Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE) by the Government of India.
