Republican Party member and Sikh woman lawyer Harmeet Kaur Dhillon has been facing criticism from right-wingers online for reciting ‘ardas’ (Sikh prayer) on the stage on the closing of the first night of the four-day Republican National Convention (RNC) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the US, Monday.
An elected member of the Republican Party and a staunch vocal supporter of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, Dhillon posted a video of a content creator, Melonie Mac, who has more than 2 lakh followers on X, in which Mac could be heard making hateful speech against her for reciting ‘ardas’.
“Austere religious scholar,” Harmeet termed Mac. “This woman (@pnjaban) cursed our nation by hosting a prayer to a demon and a bunch of RINOs are supporting it,” Mac posted on X.
“Yesterday, Harmeet Kaur recited a beautiful Ardas (Sikh prayer) at the RNC praying for the protection and safety of All Americans and Trump. It has been watched by millions globally. Ignorance breeds division and hate. Today there are several ignorant posts on X amplified by American influencers. Some basic facts to inform in the spirit of love and unity,” said Kulwinder Kaur, a known US physician with 2.5 lakh followers on X.
Harmeet Kaur also uploaded the translation of the ‘ardas’ on X. She had earlier said that she decided to block accounts of ‘quite a few people…’ on X. “Sikhism is a monotheistic faith — we believe in one God, the same God other monotheistic faiths worship. I am deeply touched & grateful for the thousands of positive messages I have received,” Harmeet said on X. She also got the support of a big section as she was under fire from the right-wing.
“I finally broke 900,000 followers today on this incredible platform. Thank you to all, even the haters and the losers! And thank you @elonmusk !,” posted Harmeet Kaur hinting she gained followers in this hate wave against her.
Rod Dreher, who writes on religion and culture, with more than 1 lakh followers on X, said, “I am an Orthodox Christian, and I stand by Harmeet Kaur Dhillon.”
“I’m very confused by all the rancor over Harmeet’s prayer at RNC. I’m an evangelical Christian, not a Sikh. But I applaud her loving care for everyone in our movement. And sharing a kindness with us last night,” posted Jim Pfaff, president of The Conservative Caucus.
