Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah actor Gurucharan Singh, known for bringing laughter to many, caused concern nationwide when he went missing in April 2024. After 25 days, he returned home and explained that he had been on a spiritual journey. His disappearance made headlines and a flurry of theories. Social media was abuzz with speculations, including suggestions of financial difficulties, and doubts regarding his reported use of multiple email accounts before vanishing. However, he clarified that he went on a spiritual journey and aimed at reaching the Himalayas in the quest. “I didn’t disappear because I was in debt or because of my inability to repay the loan. Karz toh mujhpar aaj bhi hai (I still have loans to pay). Niyat meri acchi hai aur udhar lekar abhi tak mein credit card and EMIs ki payment kiye jaraha hoon (My intentions are good. I am borrowing money from people to pay credit card bills and bank EMIs),” he clarified. Singh also revealed that it has been four years since he has been looking for work and has only met with rejections.
After spending 25 days in anonymity and moving from one place to another, Singh, who played Roshan Sodhi in the show, said, he is a changed person now and has better financial wisdom. “I have transformed as a person. Maine 25 din mein duniya dekhi hai (I have seen the world in those 25 days). I was on a spiritual journey and I didn’t do it for a publicity stunt. I didn’t even know the word before,” said Singh, adding, “I have made a lot of judgements as far as money is concerned. I would suggest people not to get stuck in the loop of borrowing money. You keep taking loans after loans.” He shared that when he had the money, he would pay his driver Rs 50,000 without even thinking and has also helped his cook monetarily when he was constructing his house.
When asked why he chose to leave this way, he replied that he was “hurt” by his close ones. He joked, “Producer Asit Kumarr Modi mujhe kehte hai ki ‘tu mujhe phone kar leta toh main bhi tere sath chal leta’ (Producer Asit Kumarr Modi tell me if I had informed him, he would have also tagged along).” However, revealing the real reason behind leaving his family behind for 25 days, he shared, “There comes a time when you distance yourself from your family and the world. I had been hurt by my near and dear ones, despite trying to get work. I was continuously facing rejections. Having said that, I knew, no matter what happens, I was not going to think of suicide.”
Gurucharan Singh disappeared on April 22 while visiting Delhi for his father’s birthday. He was supposed to fly from Delhi to Mumbai but didn’t board the flight and went missing. Worried, his father, Hargit Singh, filed a police complaint, leading to an FIR under Section 365 of the Indian Penal Code. He assured that Gurucharan was in a stable mental state.
