Shankar-Kamal Haasan’s Indian 2 gets OTT release date, fans ask for date of film’s Hindi version | Tamil News

Indian 2, a film that was pegged to be the big juggernaut that would rewrite box-office records in the country, couldn’t live up to the hype. The direct sequel to Shankar’s 1996 vigilante film, Indian, starring Kamal Haasan, received a mixed response during its theatrical run. In fact, there were reports suggesting the streaming giant Netflix had some skirmishes with Lyca Productions, the makers of Indian 2, and the OTT release is in jeopardy. Putting to rest all such rumours, Netflix revealed that Indian 2 will begin streaming on August 9, less than a month after its worldwide release on July 12.

Indian 2, which also stars Siddharth, Samuthirakani, Priya Bhavani Shankar, and Bobby Simha, was set a couple of decades after the happenings of the first part. Senapathy, the aged vigilante, returns to the country after a self-imposed exile, to once again uproot the evil of corruption. The challenges he faces in his exploits is what Indian 2 is all about. While the film did find its share of takers in the initial week, the overwhelming negative responses to the movie led to collections dipping, and ending up far below expectations.

Interestingly, only the Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada versions of the film will be streaming on Netflix from August 9. Netizens have been asking about the updated release date for the Hindi version, but there has been no official announcement on this front.

Festive offer

With music by Anirudh Ravichander, and cinematography by Ravi Varman, Indian 2 is not just a sequel, but also the first part of a duology. Glimpses of Indian 3, which traces the story of Senapathy and his father, and connects it to the present-day happenings, were added to Indian 2. In fact, many lauded the glimpse of Indian 3, and felt the film could have been compressed into one part, instead of releasing it in two parts. They felt Kamal Haasan’s claims of wanting to do Indian 2 only for Indian 3 as a rather expensive but smart choice.

Kamal Haasan, who was also recently seen as the primary antagonist in Kalki 2898 AD, is currently working on Mani Ratnam’s Thug Life, and has stunt choreographer duo Anbariv’s next in the pipeline.
