In the early hours of Friday, Shanu and his wife Shabnam, along with their three children, were fast asleep when the roof of their house suddenly collapsed — killing their youngest child, three-month-old Ikra.
The incident took place at 3 am in Chhuriya mohalla in Tughlakabad Village, said police. “There were single-storey rooms situated in a very old building. The plaster of the room fell on the family members sleeping under the same roof,” said DCP (Southeast) Rajesh Deo.
The family was taken to AIIMS for treatment where Ikra was declared dead on arrival.
In another incident, a man died after a chunk of marble, from the roof of Digambar Jain temple in Gandhi Nagar, fell on his head. The incident took place Friday morning when devotees were standing in the main alley in front of the temple. The man, 20-year-old Kunal Jain, was taken to Goyal Hospital in Geeta Colony where he was declared dead on arrival.
A case under Section 106 (death by negligence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita has been registered and further investigation is on, police said.
