Special Commissioner of Police (Northern Zone Law and Order) Deepender Pathak said the situation in the area was under control and confirmed the arrest.
Police has registered First Information Report ,FIR) Sections 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 149 (unlawful assembly), 307 (attempt to murder), 120-B (criminal conspiracy), 186 (obstructing public servant from discharge of public functions) ), 353 (assault or criminal force to prevent public servant from discharging his duty), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to public servant to prevent him from performing his duty), 323 (causing hurt), 436 (by fire Mischief), 34 (general intent) and section 427 (mischief causing damage amounting to fifty rupees) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Arms Act at Jahangirpuri police station.
A senior police officer said that nine people, including eight police personnel and a local resident, were injured and they are all admitted to Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial Hospital. “A sub-inspector suffered bullet injuries and is in a stable condition,” the officer said.
According to officials, stones were pelted in the area on Saturday evening and the situation remained tense till late night. On Sunday, security personnel of paramilitary forces along with senior officials conducted a flag march in the area, following which normalcy was restored, police said.
This is the first major communal flare-up in the national capital since the northeast Delhi riots of February 2020, in which 53 people were killed and several others injured.
Sources said that following the clashes in other parts of the country, the Deputy Commissioners of Police were already informed by senior officials and the Special Branch of Delhi Police was asked to be on alert. “They were asked to make adequate arrangements during such processions,” an official said.
An official said that the police had permission for the Shobha Yatra and around 50 policemen were deployed along with PCR, MVP and drones in Jahangirpuri.
