Director Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2898 AD has turned out to be the biggest box office blockbuster of the year, and now it is all set to complete a month in cinemas. On its 29th day at the box office, the post-apocalyptic epic crossed the whopping Rs 1100 mark in gross worldwide earnings, and the Rs 739 crore gross mark in domestic collections (according to industry tracking website Sacnilk). The nett earnings of Nag Ashwin’s film stand at Rs 623.7 crore domestically, after it earned around Rs 1.5 crore on Thursday.
The Prabhas and Deepika Padukone-starrer has become the seventh Indian film to cross the Rs 1000 crore worldwide. With this, Prabhas has cemented his position as one of the biggest Indian stars of his generation, after a series of box office duds raised questions about his bankability following Baahubali 2’s success back in 2017.
Kalki 2898 AD has joined the illustrious list of top-grossing Indian films like Aamir Khan’s Dangal (which earned Rs 2,023.81 crore in 2016), Prabhas’ Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (which earned Rs 1,810.595 crore in 2017), SS Rajamouli’s RRR (which earned Rs 1,387.26 crore in 2022), Yash’s KGF: Chapter 2 (which earned Rs 1,200–1,250 crore in 2022), Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan (which earned Rs 1,148.32 crore in 2023), and Pathaan (which earned Rs 1,050.3 crore the same year).
If it continues to perform this way, Kalki will soon become one of the top five highest-grossing Indian films in history. Kalki 2898 AD has cameos by several pan-Indian actors like Vijay Deverakonda, Dulquer Salmaan, Mrunal Thakur, and filmmaker SS Rajamouli, among other celebrities. It stars Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan in pivotal roles, and the makers are now working on its sequel.
