Four members of a family, including a couple and their two sons, were arrested on Tuesday for allegedly harassing a graduate student, who allegedly died by suicide in her house, in Hardoi. The police claim to have recovered a suicide note.
On Monday morning, the police received the information that the second-year graduate had died by suicide, following which, the police team rushed to the spot.
Later, the girl’s family produced a suicide note, which they claimed to have recovered from the victim’s room. The family told police that the male members of the house had gone to the field. On finding her daughter’s body, the mother informed the neighbours, who alerted the police and the male members of the house.
Hardoi Additional Superintendent of Police Martand Prakash Singh said that five people were named in the case. “We have arrested four of them and are hunting for the missing person,” he said.
The girl alleged in the suicide note that the accused were making obscene gestures, harassing, and threatening her. The note is being sent to a forensic laboratory for examination, Singh said.
The accused have been booked on charges of abetment of suicide, said an officer.
The family alleged that they had a land dispute with their accused neighbours, over a year ago. The girl stopped going to the school due to the harassment, the family said. They also told police that the accused had also threatened to thrash her brother.
