First FIR in Pune city under ‘Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita’ lodged at Warje Malwadi police station at 4 am | Pune News

As the new criminal laws came into effect on Monday, the Pune city police lodged their first case under the new law around 4 am.

The FIR under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections was registered at the Warje Malwadi police station.

Additional Commissioner of Police (crime) Shailesh Balkawade confirmed this was the first FIR of Pune city police under the new criminal law.

The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA), passed in Parliament last December replaced the Indian Penal Code, 1860, the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), 1973, and the Indian Evidence Act, 1872 respectively on Monday.

The complainant in the first FIR under the BNS, 2023 in Pune city is a 32-year-old Akshay Tupe, a resident of Shivganga society in Warje, who was allegedly attacked by four persons around 12.40 am. Police said the four accused attacked Tupe with a cement block at the Canal road in Warje, leaving him injured. Police have booked the accused persons on charges of voluntarily causing hurt and intentional insult, under sections 118 (2), 115 (2), 352, 3 (5) of the BNS. Police have launched a probe into this case to confirm the motive behind the assault.

Meanwhile, Additional Commissioner of Police Balkawade said that for the past two months, officers and constabulary of the Pune city police were being trained for using the new criminal laws. Balkawade said the training of all officers of the rank of assistant commissioner of police and above is completed.

The training of 95 percent officers from the rank of police sub inspectors to senior inspectors and 85 percent of the staffers of the rank from police constable to assistant sub inspector is done. The training of remaining officers is on and would be completed soon, police said.
