In the bypolls for four Assembly seats in West Bengal, the stakes are high for both the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the principal Opposition BJP. While the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC is attempting to maintain its supremacy it showed in the recent parliamentary elections, when it won 29 seats out of 42 in the state, the BJP is hoping for a turnaround after its Lok Sabha seats’ tally dropped to 12 from 18 in the 2019 polls.

Of the four Assembly constituencies up for bypolls, three seats – Ranaghat Dakshin in Nadia district, Bagdah in North 24 Parganas district and Raiganj in North Dinajpur district – were bagged by the BJP and the remaining one – Maniktala in Kolkata – was won by the TMC in the 2021 Assembly elections.
