With the water level rising in Krishna river in Sangli district, the Southern Command of the Indian Army has deployed a column of around 100 soldiers consisting of infantry troops, medical team and engineers after the district administration sought assistance.
With increased discharge of water from Koyna and Chandoli dams, the water level in Krishna river in Sangli is rising. “An Army column of approximately 100 soldiers consisting of infantry troops, medical team and engineers has moved for deployment at Sangli district based on assistance sought by the District Collector, Sangli,” a note from the Defence PRO, Pune, read.
The deployment in Sangli comes a day after the Army deployed rescue and relief column in Ekta Nagar area of Pune. The Pune-headquartered Southern Command is closely monitoring the situation in its area of responsibility.
A press statement from the Southern Command said on Thursday, “The Army column is fully equipped with rescue boats and essential healthcare services to assist the affected people, ensuring prompt and effective support. The Indian Air Force is also on standby. The Indian armed forces are fully prepared and equipped to assist the civil administration.”
In 2018, troops from the Southern Command had undertaken extensive disaster relief efforts in Kerala in coordination with the local administration. During the 2019 floods in Sangli, Satara and Kolhapur districts, the Southern Command undertook ‘Operation Madad’ for rescue and relief efforts. In 2022, the Southern Command launched ‘Operation Varsha’ to undertake evacuation, rescue and medical response in areas affected by flooding in Telangana and Maharashtra.
Officials from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) said one of their teams has been stationed in Sangli from one week as part of its preemptive deployment strategy.
