Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal visited the Sri Akal Takht Sahib in Amritsar on Wednesday more than a week after Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh asked him to do so.
Badal had been asked to appear in person before the supreme temporal seat of the Sikh community within 15 days and submit a written explanation on the allegations levelled by some senior SAD leaders that he “has not represented the sentiments of the Panth”.
The Akal Takht Jathedar will now take a call on whether to accept Badal’s clarifications or not.
Any Sikh can seek an apology for any religious or ethical misconduct before the Akal Takht.
Earlier, rebel Akali Dal leaders had appeared before the Jathedar and apologised for the “mistakes” committed when the party was in power in the state between 2007 and 2017.
In 2015, the Akal Takht had granted a pardon to Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh. The SAD leadership has claimed that it has never interfered in the Akal Takht’s functioning and had nothing to do with the pardon granted to the Dera head. However, several party rebels alleged Badal’s influence in the matter. The Akal Takht later annulled its edict.
Badal’s visit to the Sri Akal Takht Sahib comes a day after he dissolved the party’s core committee, days after a group of senior leaders raised the flag of rebellion against him and over a month after the party’s poor show in the Lok Sabha elections.
