An adaptation of the UK show ‘35 Days’, this eight part series revolves around a mysterious young woman who shows up in a fancy housing society in Goa. Wearing an air hostess’s uniform, Farah (Neha Sharma) comes and goes, doesn’t seem to have any visitors, and keeps to herself, but is completely aware that every single man in close radius has eyes on her as she sashays down the path.
Who is she? And what does she have to do with the other inhabitants of this tony society where each household appears to harbour a secret. Does she have some kind of a hold over well-known author Rishi (Purab Kohli) and his patently unhappy wife Radhika (Shruti Seth)? What ails the gloomy Riad (Faisal Rashid), stuck alone all day in his room as his parents, mommy Benaifer (Shernaz Patel) constantly baking cakes and daddy Denzel (Kenny Desai) lusting over an online sweetie who keeps her face hidden, wait for him to emerge. How did Lalita (Amruta Khanvilkar) and Vinod (Sharib Hashmi), who look distinctly out of place, get into this exclusive preserve? Who is Tara (Sushant Digvikar) the entertainer in a nigh-club frequented by Goa’s gentry, and what is her connection with Sia (Chahat Vig), the latest wife of high-roller Tony who is the trusted partner of the very dodgy Noel (K C Shankar)?

This is an interesting ensemble, and I got pulled into all these questions which swirl around the residents, but soon enough, impatience ruled. I haven’t seen the original, but if you are working off ready-made source material I would expect zero fluff. But here it is heaped upon us. How many times can one see a character watching another from behind a curtain? Ditto for the mystery maiden and her perambulations with her carry-on, going up and down? A drug angle featuring a couple in the society and an outsider who keeps sneaking in dwindles. A thread involving a drag queen and a naive young woman starts off with punch, and then.. you get the thrust.
In the bits where the action moves out of the hothouse villas, you do get a feel of the coast and the town. The actors all do their job, with each getting a couple of scenes which give them a chance to shine (Sanyal, Shankar, Digvikar especially). But the overall writing (credits shared between Seneca Mendonsa and Anahita Menon) never really keeps the urgency and the tension in place, which is what a series like this should ideally coast on.
