3 killed, 32 injured as 8 bogies of Dibrugarh Express derails in Gonda | Lucknow News

Three people died and 32 others were injured when eight bogies of Dibrugarh Express train derailed in Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh on Thursday afternoon. The condition of six injured, including a woman, is said to be serious.

The Assam-bound train from Chandigarh derailed between Jhilahi and Motiganj railway stations, 30 km from Gonda town.

The deceased have been identified as Rahul (38), a resident of Chandigarh; and Saroj Kumar Singh (30) from Bihar. The identity of the third person, also a male, is yet to be ascertained.

The Railways and the UP Police are investigating the claim of the train’s loco pilot, who said that he heard an explosion just before the derailment.

Chief Public Relations Officer (North Eastern Railway) Pankaj Singh said that apart from a Commission of Railway Safety inquiry, a high-level inquiry has also been ordered into the derailment.

Following the derailment around 2.40 pm, a station disaster Response Force reached the spot along with medical teams and ambulances to rescue passengers. The railway department also dispatched a special ambulance to the accident spot.

The rescued passengers were escorted to nearby Mankapur railway station, from where they were sent to their destinations on a special train. Other trains were diverted, said an officer.

“Work is in progress to clear the railway tracks. An inquiry has begun and statements of the railway staff are being recorded,” Divisional Railway Manager (North Eastern Railway) Aditya Kumar said.

The Railways has announced Rs 10 lakh ex-gratia to the next of kin of the deceased, Rs 2.5 lakh to the seriously injured, and Rs 50,000 to those with minor injuries.

“For a moment the coach was filled with dust and it was all dark. I don’t remember what happened in the next few seconds. I only remember the cries and that a passenger pulled my hand, and helped me get out of the window,” PTI quoted a passenger, Sandeep Kumar, as saying.

Union Minister Kirti Vardhan Singh also visited Mankapur railway station to assess the rescue work.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed district authorities to ensure proper treatment for those injured in the accident, said officials.

In a statement, the Uttar Pradesh government said a 40-member medical team and 15 ambulances reached the site immediately to oversee the transfer of the injured to hospitals.

The authorities released several helpline numbers, including 8957400965 (Gonda) and 8957409292 (Lucknow) and 9957555960 (Dibrugarh).
