Pawar meets Yechury, CPI General Secretary D Raja and NCP leaders Praful Patel and PC Chacko in Delhi and apprised him of his decision of not contesting the elections.

Yechury said, “I have been told that Pawar will not be the face of the opposition for the presidential election, other names are being considered.”

Opposition sources said Pawar was unwilling to engage in a battle that he was sure to lose at this point in his political career.

Banerjee is in Delhi for a meeting of non-BJP parties, which she has called to work out a joint strategy for the upcoming presidential election.

Trinamool Congress supremo Banerjee has called a meeting at the National Capital’s Constitution Club on June 15 to discuss coming up with the opposition candidate by consensus.

The election of the President of India will be held on 18 July.
