26 people were arrested on Friday for alleged illegal conversions in Uttar Pradesh’s Fatehpur district.
It is learned that the arrests were made after raids were conducted at a church in Hariharganj area on information given by members of a Hindu organisation.
Apart from the anti-conversion law, the police also leveled charges of promoting enmity between the two groups against the accused. “All those arrested were produced in a local court in Fatehpur. The court dropped the anti-conversion charges as the complainant was not a party to the alleged conversion as the case was filed by a member of a Hindu organisation. The court granted bail to nine people, while others were sent to jail,” said circle officer (city) Dinesh Chandra Mishra.
“The arrested persons were either those who were trying to convert people or those who had already converted to Christianity,” Mishra said. Police said that they are getting information about some people in Hariharganj area trying to persuade them to convert to Christianity.
