With less than 100 days to go for the US presidential elections, the Democratic Party has finally backed Vice President Kamala Harris to contest against Republican candidate Donald Trump.
But an intriguing discourse of the battle to choose Kamala Harris’ running mate is underway and it is being reported that Josh Shapiro who is Pennsylvania’s governor is among the finalist.
Harris is bound to begin a US tour with her new running mate next week, which indicates that she will reveal her choice most probably by Monday.
Who is Josh Shapiro
Shapiro is aged 51 and was born in Missouri but got raised in Philadelphia. Talking about his parents, his father was a pediatrician and mother an educator.
Shapiro went to University of Rochester for graduation in political science. He later on enrolled in Georgetown University to pursue a law degree.
Shapiro’s Political Career
Shapiro made his debut in politics by first becoming a state representative for Pennsylvania’s Montgomery County from 2005 to 2011.
Later on, he became the chair of the Board of Commissioners in Montgomery County from 2011 until 2017.
Shapiro then served as the Attorney General of Pennsylvania state from 2017 to 2023, till the time when he became the governor of the state.
In 2022, Shapiro won the gubernatorial contest against former President Donald Trump backed Republican contender Doug Mastriano.
Shapiro’s Views on Global Affairs
Shapiro’s approval rating has climbed in the past couple of years and he could be an asset for Democrats in winning the crucial state of Pennsylvania.
Shapiro has supported Israel in its war against Gaza which broke out in October last year.
Though the bone of contention for Democrats remains the criticism by Shapiro of student protests on school campuses in Pennsylvania, as it could divide the party.
If Shapiro is chosen by Harris to be the running mate and Democrats win the election, he would be the first Jewish vice-president of the United States.
