In the wake of the reports of bridges collapsing in neighbouring Bihar, the Uttar Pradesh government has ordered a “thorough survey” of bridges in the state, especially the ones which are over 50 years old, so as to avoid any untoward incidents in case of heavy rainfall. The state Public Works Department (PWD), which has been assigned the task, has so far conducted a survey of over 700 old bridges of which nearly 80 have been found to be either “unfit or requiring a major repair”.
