The photo of Brazilian surf star Gabriel Medina clicked immediately after riding the largest wave of the day at Teahupoo, Tahiti—securing the highest individual surfing score in Olympic history—has been recognised as one of the standout images of the 2024 Olympic Games. The image was captured by French photographer Jerome Brouillet.
The photo of Medina riding the barrel of the wave went viral, but it was the instant he emerged, celebrating with a stunning kick-out, that photographer Brouillet captured perfectly.
In a moment that feels straight out of a dream but is as real as it gets, Medina’s surreal mid-air float next to his surfboard has racked up millions of likes on Instagram.
But, what made this gravity-defying shot possible? How did Brouillet manage to capture such a magical blend of elements? Speaking to Brut India, Brouillet shared, “I took this picture because I was sure he was going to make a sensational pose after the wave and I aimed to the back of the wave and waited for him to kick out the wave.”
In that short moment, he took the time to align his camera to freeze the action when his feet were on the tiny cloud. “He’s standing upright and it probably looks like he’s walking on clouds.”
He also noted that the sky and his board were pointing in the same direction. “It’s probably looking at the sky like him,” he divulged. He emphasises the special thing about the photo.
“I was not expecting that after 12 hours, the photo would be the talk of the world. It was always on my feed. It’s just amazing,” quoted Brut India. He also expressed how grateful and happy he is that his work is getting all the recognition.
