A few Gujarat-based boat associations Tuesday felicitated Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Fisheries Minister Raghavji Patel for extending the ban on fishing activities by 15 days and allowing reopening of the fishing season after August 15. An official release said that considering the situation of turbulent weather conditions owing to climate change, boat associations of all the ports in Gujarat had made representations to the state government to extend the ban on fishing activities by 15 days and to resume the fishing season after August 15. The CM and minister were felicitated as the state government considered the representations seriously and extended the ban by 15 days, the release said. Incidentally, the development has come two days after the opposition Congress criticised the state government decision of extending the fishing ban. It said the sudden extension of the ban has pushed the fishermen into financial losses. Generally, the annual fishing ban in the state is from June 1 to July 31.
