An argument between two groups of prisoners in Tihar over the use of phones escalated on Friday, a knife was out and two undertrial prisoners were injured after they were stabbed, said officials.
Lovely (22) and Lavesh (22), who were in the same cell, were accused of murder in the same case in 2020. During the investigation, police found that one group – comprising prisoners inmates Lokesh, Nitin, Himanshu, and Abhishek — had a scuffle with Lovely and Lavesh over the use of the phone in the cell, said officials. “The fight escalated and one person from the other group took out a sua (improvised knife) and stabbed the two men,” said an officer.
Lovely and Lavesh suffered several injuries but are now stable, said police. The two were given primary treatment in the prison’s medical centre before being transferred to Dem Dayal Upadhyaya Hospital. Police subsequently registered an FIR against the four men under BNS sections 109, 118(1) and 3(5).
“We’ve taken action against the four inmates based on jail rules,” said the police officer, clarifying that the matter was not related to gangs.
In June, a fight had broken out between a member of Gogi gang, and other inmates. In May, three men attacked a group of four undertrial prisoners for rubbing shoulders with a member of the Takkar Gang.
Tihar prison has come under fire earlier for the murders of gangsters Tillu Tajpuria and Prince Tewatia last year.
Earlier, in another incident, Dilsher Azad, an undertrial prisoner, was attacked and killed with a “handmade improvised sharp-edged object” by other inmates. Both Tewatia and Azad were killed in Jail 3.
Following Tajpuria’s murder, the prison authorities had amped up security measures by procuring non-linear junction detectors that could detect metal objects two feet deep in the concrete. Alongside the detectors, the authorities had planned to increase the frequency of surprise checks by the Tamil Nadu Special Police, jail authorities and dog squads. Additionally, they’d deployed Quick Response Teams to tackle emergency or riot-like situations.
To curb the use of makeshift knives, the jail authorities had planned to install PVC exhaust fans to prevent inmates from breaking off the metal blades to fashion into improvised knives.
